Embedding sport in your college

A high quality sport and physical activity offer has a significant impact on all areas of college business. AoC Sport works with colleges to ensure that sport is a core part of college life and benefits all aspects of the student experience.

Towards Outstanding: National Standards for College Sport

AoC Sport has created a set of criteria and self-assessment tools, Towards Outstanding: National Standards for College Sport, which colleges can use as a guide in their drive for excellence. The national standards benchmark the impact that sport and physical activity can have on students.

The standards have been refreshed for 2016. Download the updated document and self-assessment tool below.

Towards Outstanding: National Standards for College Sport

Colleges can use the standards to increase quality, share good practice and help self-assess their provision. In turn, this process can help with Self-Assessment Reports (SARs) and improvement planning.

A series of good practice examples from across a range of colleges are also available, and will be updated regularly.

A self-assessment framework is available to access as a member benefit.

Developing a cross-college sport and physical activity strategy

A cross-college sport strategy that encompasses all areas of college business helps to provide a clear vision and direction for sport and physical activity. Benefits of a sport and physical activity strategy include:

  • Raises the profile of sport and demonstrates how it can contribute to teaching and learning across the curriculum
  • Supports recruitment policies
  • Improves internal communication
  • Helps build partnerships with employers and community sport organisations
  • Supports external funding applications
  • Helps set priorities and deploy staff
  • We have a range of resources and training to help colleges write their strategy.
