Lacrosse

What is Lacrosse?

Lacrosse, is a modern version of the North American Indian game of baggataway, in which two teams of players use long-handled, racket like implements (crosses) to catch, carry, or throw a ball down the field or into the opponents’ goal.

Teams usually have 10 players: the goalkeeper, three defenders, three midfielders (one of whom is the centre), and three attackers. There are two officials, a referee and a judge.

The game is divided into four periods of 15 minutes each, with intervals of one minute between the first and second quarters and between the third and fourth quarters and a 10-minute rest at halftime. The field is about 100 metres long and 60 yards wide. The goals are 80 yards apart.

England Lacrosse, the National Governing Body for Lacrosse in England has an extensive college offer. Their offer utilises the Lacrosse 6s version of the sport; a small-sided game with easy to understand rules, designed to support players of all abilities to have a positive experience with sport.

England Lacrosse have created a Lacrosse 6s resource pack to be used by colleges as ideas for to be included in their Lacrosse sessions, you can download this resource pack below.

How can colleges get involved?

England Lacrosse runs a Lacrosse Accredited Colleges Scheme (LACS) in Further Education institutions across England. The scheme aims to bring lacrosse to the FE sector through a coordinated and sustainable programme to increase regular participation within the 16-18 age group.

Member colleges receive training from England Lacrosse to assist in delivery of the sport, in-person CPD, and additional learning opportunities for identified students through a Student Ambassador initiative designed to give young adults leadership skills in addition to supporting practical delivery of lacrosse.

The teacher training provided alongside the above Introduction to Lacrosse resource pack give students an ideal grounding in lacrosse covering principles of the game, technical skills, activities & game-based practices and also covers the playing and officiating of a full-game situation.
