Announcement regarding sports in regional tournaments and National Championships for 2016/17
Following a long and detailed review process, AoC Sport is set to make several changes to the regional tournaments and National Championships for 2016/17.
After looking very carefully at participant numbers, structure of the competitions, cost/benefit, popularity and NGB support, and with the full agreement of the Operations Advisory Group, we’ve decided on the following changes for next year:
After trialling cricket in an Indoor 24 format at the 2016 National Championships, it will be included in the Wilkinson Sword competition for 2017.
Due to issues around logistics and the expense of running the event, swimming will be removed from the National Championships.
Due to health and safety concerns, trampolining will be removed from the National Championships.
AoC Sport is looking to develop the competition in 2016/17, with a clear development plan in each region, supported by the RFU and ECRFU.
AoC Sport is looking to expand the competition in 2016/17, with a focus to identify more competitors in each region.
Badminton, tennis and table tennis
All three sports will change to team competitions in 2016/17, with players able to play in two games per match. All three NGBs are supportive of a team competition in line with their competition pathway.
Regions without AoC Sport hockey leagues can enter regional hockey teams, subject to similar conditions as those in the women’s rugby competition.
