AoC Sport confirms dates of mental health first aid workshops
Following the announcement last month about our mental health pilot project with StreetGames, AoC Sport can now confirm dates of four free Mental Health First Aid workshops to be delivered across the country exclusively for AoC Sport members.
The workshops are aimed at staff that engage with students through sport and physical activity sessions in college and will explore the most common mental health conditions experienced by young people and how staff can prevent or intervene when needed. Sports staff are trained to give first aid without hesitation and students’ mental health is just as important as physical health. The relationship that sports staff have with students is less formal than teaching staff and so they’re well placed to notice signs of mental health conditions and often young people will confide in them when they are struggling.
Last week the Association of Colleges released the results of their second mental health survey with 85% of respondents reporting an increase in students with disclosed mental health issues in the past three years. AoC Sport is working closely with the Association of Colleges, StreetGames and other partners to support colleges to utilise physical activity to improve the mental health of students.
