AoC Sport launches the WorldSkills UK Fitness Trainer Competition for 2017

After an incredible year with the 2016 Fitness Trainer Competition – the first as part of the WorldSkills UK suite of competitions – AoC Sport is launching the 2017 competition for training institutions to get involved early and give their talented students the best chance in the competition when it opens for entries in spring 2017.

The WorldSkills UK Fitness Trainer Competition is the only WorldSkills UK competition – of a suite of more than 55 competitions – in the active leisure industry and the only skills competition for students in the UK working towards qualifications in the fitness industry, regardless of where and with which institution they study.

The competition consists of two categories, Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer, both challenging aspiring fitness professionals’ skills on industry-driven criteria and allowing them to demonstrate that they have more to give to prospective employers than just their qualification.

In 2016, the competition partnered with GLL and Beachbody UK to further develop the 12 finalists with their Continued Professional Development (CPD) and top-up courses, as well as GLL offering work placements to the winners of each category.

The competition recognises the work of Future Fit Training who publish the yearly ‘Raising the Bar’ report, which highlights the skills gap in the industry between vocational training and industry entry requirements. Future Fit Training have endorsed the competition as an opportunity for students to demonstrate that they have the additional skills needed by the modern and ever-changing industry; their head of school for personal training having judged with the competition team at every stage.

The competition entry will open in spring 2017 with competitors having to complete a short theory test and submit a two-minute video showcase of their work before the best of them are invited to a live heat where they’ll compete for a coveted finals place.

To assist institutions of all types to develop their students for competition, AoC Sport produces a resource pack of over 30 documents which gives them all the materials needed to run an internal competition before entering. AoC Sport member colleges receive this and additional support completely free of charge, other institutions can purchase a 2017 resource pack for a nominal fee. To request the 2017 resource pack or join our ‘First to Know’ list, institutions will need to complete a short request form.

Institutions and individuals will also have the opportunity to get involved through judging and hosting events, more information will be released shortly about this. Please sign up to the ‘First to Know’ list to make sure you receive updates directly.
