AoC Sport Leadership Academy launched

We are delighted to launch the AoC Sport Leadership Academy. The academy is the first over-arching volunteer programme which encompasses all the AoC Sport volunteering projects and also links volunteers with deployment opportunities with our partners.

The aim of the academy is to increase the number of students volunteering in sport and to diversify the volunteer workforce to better reflect society.

AoC Sport will work with partners the Youth Sport Trust and Sports Leaders on transition of volunteers that leave school to study at college.

By creating the academy, we plan to simplify the recruitment process and ensure we measure the impact of the being part of the leadership academy has on volunteers.

There will be a range of opportunities for students to become part of the academy in a variety of roles. The academy will incorporate previous volunteer roles including our successful This Girl Can ambassador programme, as well as new opportunities aimed at diversifying the volunteer workforce.

Why they should get involved?

Volunteering has many benefits including meeting new people, developing new skills and improved wellbeing.

The Leadership Academy will provide unique volunteering opportunities at regional and national sports events.

In addition to this, for the first time, volunteers will have access to online training and support that will help them to continue volunteering within their college or local community and enhance their employability skills. The programme will also include training on a range of personal and professional development topics delivered by AoC Sport and partners.

My experience at the University of Nottingham was amazing. Seeing lots of different talented individuals and meeting new people has been the highlight of my weekend. Volunteering with AoC Sport has given me many different opportunities that I wouldn’t have experienced otherwise. Volunteering has been the best thing that I could have done, I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

Vicky Osbourne, volunteer at the AoC Sport National Championships, and a student at Walsall College

Who can apply?

Volunteer roles are open to all applicants currently studying at college in England. The academy is aiming to diversify the volunteers to better reflect society and so we are encouraging applications from all curriculum areas and from under-represented groups.

How to get involved

The first two roles available to apply for are AoC Sport leader and This Girl Can ambassador. Expressions of interest for these will open via the AoC Sport website on Monday 10 September.

AoC Sport leaders will be recruited to volunteer at AoC Sport and partner events, including regional tournaments and National Championships.

The This Girl Can Ambassadors will be tasked with raising awareness of the Sport England campaign, as well as promoting and delivering new and existing college activities to try and encourage female students to get active.
