AoC Sport national netball squad get Northern Ireland preparations underway with first training weekend

The AoC Sport national netball squad travelled to a sunny Gateshead for their first training weekend on January 16.

The squad met and worked at Gateshead Leisure Centre, as they got preparations underway for their forthcoming fixture against Northern Ireland U21s in February.

The Saturday session consisted of team building, netball drills and skills, and squad match-play. Players also received their new Nike kit.

Sunday morning again saw more training with drills focussing on passing and moving and also players developing their own drills for decision-making.

Two squads were picked and players practiced in these before the afternoon match-play session. All players took to the court in the afternoon and played against Newcastle City, a local regional team.

The games were designed to look at the strengths and weaknesses of the AoC Sport players, as well as assessing team combinations for the upcoming matches.

All of the players played very well and worked hard throughout the weekend to improve and it proved to be great start to the season.

The coaches also selected their ‘players of the weekend’, who were named as:

  • Lydia Carney
  • Georgia Lawson
  • Emma Johnson
  • Leah Turner
