BLOG: Why you should come to the 2019 Sport Curriculum Conference

Ahead of next week’s AoC Sport Curriculum Conference Policy Manager Matt Rhodes writes about why this year’s event is not to be missed.

This is the fifth AoC Sport Curriculum Conference and my fourth. What always strikes me from this event and my visits to colleges and regional network meetings, is the breadth of roles and responsibilities that Heads of Sport and Curriculum managers have.

This conference is an opportunity to get away from the distractions of the office for a day and find out what is happening in the ever-changing landscape of sport and FE.

Although the themes remain similar – Ofsted, qualification reform, English and Maths, employers and work experience – the policy is constantly changing and we can’t afford to stand still.

Over the next 18 months we will see a new Ofsted Education Inspection Framework, a review of qualifications, the start of T Level delivery and a post-18 education and funding review.

While it’s great to reflect on some of the incredible work of college sport departments, this conference is all about looking to the future and ensuring that we are able to embrace the challenges ahead, something which sport departments continue to excel at.

In addition to hearing from fantastic speakers , in my view there is also huge value in getting out of the college and speaking to colleagues from across the country.

Many college visits and sharing of best practice stems from attendance at this event. I would encourage all delegates to go and speak to someone you don’t know, it’s almost guaranteed they will be having similar challenges to you and if you get lucky they may also have a solution.

I’m thrilled with the programme this year and thank all the college staff that have made suggestions on the workshop themes. This is still the only national sport curriculum conference and I look forward to seeing you all there.
