East Durham College student crowned national boxing champion
A talented East Durham College student has recently returned from the Amateur Boxing Association of England National Championships as the new female youth champion.
Shauna-Leigh Taylor, 16, from Hetton, travelled to Rotherham last week to compete in the championships, defeating Lancashire’s Michelle Lynch in the under 51kg final.
Shauna joined the college last year from Hetton School and is on a sport course at the college, whilst taking part in the college’s elite boxing scholarship programme.
Since 2014, alongside her training at the East Durham College Boxing Club, Shauna has also been part of the England ABA national set up.
Shauna was overwhelmed to have won the title and was proud to see her hard work and dedication pay off.
“This is a great achievement for me and the proudest moment of my boxing career so far,” she said.
“I love the sport and to see all my training pay off really shows that with the right amount of effort and dedication you can achieve your goals.”
East Durham College head boxing coach, Dave Binns, added: “This is a huge achievement for Shauna, and we are all extremely proud of her here at the college.
“She joined us here to train last summer and she has just gone from strength to strength, she’s a fine advert for the female side of the sport and I’m sure she will continue to develop and go on to achieve great things.”
