Former Cheadle student Storey gets FE medal tally rolling at Paralympics

ParalympicsGB got off to a fantastic start in the Paralympic Games in Rio yesterday, with three of their 11 opening day medals coming from former college students.

Former Cheadle and Marple College student Dame Sarah Storey got the ball rolling, as she became ParalympicsGB’s most successful ever female athlete with gold in the C5 3,000m individual pursuit – although she didn’t require the full distance to catch team-mate Crystal Lane.

The victory took Storey’s Paralympic tally to 12 gold medals, across cycling and swimming.

Two more medals then followed in the pool, with former Long Road Sixth Form College student Harriet Lee winning silver in the SB9 100m breaststroke, setting a personal best in the process.

Jonathan Fox MBE, a former Cornwall College student, also won silver overnight in the S7 100m backstroke.
