Former Loughborough student Hitchon makes history with Olympic bronze
Former Loughborough College student Sophie Hitchon made history yesterday, as she became the first TeamGB athlete to win an Olympic medal in the women’s hammer throw.
Sophie set a new British record with her throw of 74.54m, which was enough for her to claim third place.
Elsewhere, Charlotte Dujardin won gold in the individual dressage event on horse Valegro.
Valegro trains at Hartpury College and is owned by Carl Hester MBE, who is an equine academy coach at the college, and finished seventh out of 18 in yesterday’s final.
TeamGB’s women’s hockey team are also targeting a medal after reaching the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Spain last night – former Loughborough College student Nicola White is in the squad.
