Royal National College for the Blind students demonstrate inclusive fitness training at the Skills Show

Four students from the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) took to the WorldSkills UK Fitness Trainer Competition stage during the Skills Show this month, to demonstrate inclusive fitness sessions.

The WorldSkills UK Fitness Trainer Competition finals, run by AoC Sport, were part of the Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC for the first time, and after the competitive side of events concluded on Friday night, the stage was opened up to RNC students for three showcase sessions on Saturday, in partnership with Natspec.

Michael Fleet (18) and Matthew Odgers (21), both studying Edexcel Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness, and Ben Andrews (23) and Joshua Murphy (17), both studying Edexcel Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Personal Training, got involved in running sessions and taking part.

Second year student Michael Fleet said: “Once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. I wouldn’t have done this a few months ago but the course has prepared me well with the skills and practice I needed.”

Sport and Recreation teacher Aaron Rees, who will also be a judge at next year’s WorldSkills UK Fitness Trainer Competition, said: “I was really proud of the students, they acted very professionally on the day. Mike ran in to a bit of trouble with some of the plyometric exercises but he managed to compose himself, think on his feet and alter the session so seamlessly that I doubt anyone would have noticed. I couldn’t have asked for more.

“The students had a lot of interaction with other instructors and learned tips on how to profile themselves in the future and they were able to try out new pieces of equipment that we don’t have here at the college.”

The Skills Show attracted more than 90,000 people across the three days, and visitors were able to see finalists in the Personal Trainer and Gym Instructor categories compete for medals, as well as enjoying the inclusive sessions from RNC students, and demonstrations from Beachbody Live UK.
