Successful tenth season for GB colleges men’s hockey team
The tenth GB Colleges Men’s Hockey season culminated in a successful three-test series victory against Scotland U17s.
The student team enjoyed 2-1, 5-0 and 6-2 victories in July.
The season commenced with a trials process which resulted in 23 players being selected at the final trial at Cannock.
After a successful training camp at Lindum HC, games were set up against England U16s, Wales U18s and Scotland U17s.
The weather played its part, with games against England U16s twice called off due to snow.
Eventually the squad played its first two international fixtures against Wales U18s at the Welsh Institute of Sport at the end of May.
A win and a defeat was probably a fair set of results and left the squad with things to work on – but not much time as the rearranged date for the England game was just two days later.
The squad trained at Loughborough University in the morning before playing England U16s in the afternoon and coming away with a draw in a tight game.
After a month’s break the squad travelled up to Edinburgh at the beginning of July for a Friday night fixture. Most of the squad had flown up the same day – a new experience for many playing. With such a journey the performance was rusty but the team managed to battle out a 2-1 win.
A good night’s rest saw the team well prepared for their two games on Saturday, winning the first 5-0 with an outstanding performance, followed up with another very good performance in a 6-2 win.
