Q & AS With Experts

As part of the Be Your Best Pre-Season programme, we will also have a series of experts from the sport and fitness sector hosting a Q&A on AoC Sport’s Instagram page. 

The Q&A series will focus on different topics, including nutrition, sports psychology and strength and conditioning. Staff and students will be actively encouraged to submit their questions via social media and email for our panel of experts to answer. 

 A call for questions for the forthcoming topic will be issued on AoC Sport’s Instagram page, and via email on a Wednesday afternoon and students and staff will have 24 hours to submit their questions for the following week. 

Timeline 

Expert: Dr Darren Britton, Solent University  

Topic: Sports Psychology 

Date: Wednesday 23 Septemberat 2pm 

Darren is a lecturer in sport psychology in the School of Sport, Health, and Social Sciences at Solent University. His doctorate focused on stress reactivity in the development of adolescent athletes. 

Darren has worked with numerous elite athletes in his career including the AFC Bournemouth Academy, Hampshire County Cricket, Dorset County Cricket, elite marathon runners, triathletes and international sailors.  

 

 Expert: Jon Boyle, Durham University  

Topic: Strength & Conditioning 

Date: Wednesday 30 Septemberat 2pm 

 Jon is a member of Team Durham’s performance sport staff, responsible for supporting several of their elite athletes. Jon’s areas of interest include weightlifting, bodybuilding and the physical preparation for rowing.

Jon has worked within the British Rowing talent pathway and with Durham University, which is a designated Rowing Centre of Excellence. He has worked with Olympic athletes such as Angus Groom (Rio 2016), Will Fletcher (Silver 2015 World Championships, Rio 2016) and Stewart Innes (Bronze 2015 World Championships, Rio 2016). 

He has also worked with athletes who went on to become professional Premiership rugby players with Newcastle Falcons and Sale Sharks. 

Expert: Dr Mayur K Ranchordas, Sheffield Hallam University 

Topic: Nutrition 

Date: Wednesday 7 October at 2pm 

Mayur is a specialist in nutrition at Sheffield Hallam University and is a sport nutrition consultant who has supported several Olympic and world champions through his time  at the English Institute of Sport.  

Most recently he has worked at the top level of English football with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and Premier League Referees (PGMOL) providing sport nutrition support.  

Mayur’s areas of interest are supplements and performance, weight management and recovery. 

 

Expert: Andy Turner, former Olympic 110m hurdler 

Topic: Speed Training  

Date: Wednesday 14 October  at 2pm

Andy Turner is a former European and Commonwealth 110m hurdles champion, who represented Great Britain at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics and won medals at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. 

Since retiring from competitive athletics Andy has been a personal trainer and bodybuilder but is now Head Coach of Stockport’s H1VE Boutique fitness studio. 

 

Expert: Keith Burnett, Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Therapies at University of Wolverhampton 

Topic: Recovery & Injury Prevention 

Date: Wednesday 21 October at 2pm

Keith is the sports therapist to the England University Rugby League team and currently a lecturer in Sports Therapy at the University of Wolverhampton. He is also completing his PhD in Neck Injury Management at Leeds Beckett University.
